After the public release of IOS 14, users discovered a new work around that let them change the app icons and completely redesign their home screen using Siri shortcuts.
If you’re on Android then that’s nothing new for you. But as this feature was new on IOS, people started sharing screenshots of their newly customized home screens with custom app icons and widgets.
A designer, known online as Traf noticed this trend and started customizing his own iPhone with his own designed icons and some custom downloaded widgets and posted a screenshot of it on Twitter. Then people started asking where to get those icons he used.
Then he quickly packaged all those icons and uploaded them to Gumroad. At first he wasn’t sure what those icons should be priced at, so he decided to charge 286000 USD. But then something unexpected happened.
Popular tech youtuber Marques Brownlee, published a video about this new IOS 14 feature, where he was using Traf’s icon pack for his setup. He also mentioned the link where others can get it in the description.
Then Traf started getting thousands of new visitors. According to him, he was making around 286K to 116,147 from 4188 customers.
According to Traf, the secret behind this overnight success was producing the right content at the right time and a little bit of luck, which was MKBHD in this case. But he also said those hoping to emulate his success should not try to exploit online trends. If I had done this exclusively for making money, I’m convinced it wouldn’t have worked nearly as well as it did.
