Previously we already knew when under stress, some plants change color, shape, smell or give off some volatile organic compounds. But never knew if they make any sounds or not.
To study that, researchers at Tel Avy University compared a tomato and tobacco plants that were deprived of water, having their stems cut and were comfortable. They tested it using a microphone with an ultrasonic sound range of 20 to 150 kilohertz.
After testing they found that, Stressed plants were emitting significantly more sound that the comfortable ones. They were also noisy.
But without Vocal Cords how can plants make sound?
Scientists say it may be a result of an internal process known as cavitation. In this process air bubbles form and explode in the Xylum. Previously, researchers knew that cavitation can form vibrations but they had no idea about the transmission of the actual sound.
This can help us understand the plant’s condition. We can monitor when a plant needs water or in critical pain by analyzing the sound we get from them.
